Digital volume tomography (DVT)
Three-dimensional tomography method
Three-dimensional representation of structures in the mouth and jaw area
Digital volume tomography (DVT) is an imaging procedure used in dentistry for the three-dimensional representation of structures in the mouth and jaw area. This is an advanced form of computer tomography (CT) that is specially tailored to the needs of dental examinations. In contrast to conventional X-rays, which only provide two-dimensional images, CBCT enables detailed imaging of the teeth, jaw, maxillary sinuses, paranasal sinuses, nerves and other anatomical structures in three dimensions. During a CBCT examination, the patient is placed in a special X-ray tube that swivels around the patient’s head. During the pan, several X-ray images are taken from different angles.
A computer then processes these images to create a detailed 3D image of the area being examined.
