What is oral surgery?

A useful addition to periodontology and implantology

Oral surgery is a broad medical specialty that focuses on surgical procedures in the mouth and jaw area.

Oral surgery includes a variety of procedures and treatments, including:

  • the atraumatic removal of teeth (e.g. wisdom teeth)
  • apicoectomy
  • the examination of changes in the oral mucosa, for example for the early detection of tumors

Structure of the jawbone

As part of periodontal treatment or implantology

Long-term periodontitis or prolonged wearing of dentures can lead to serious bone loss in both the upper and lower jaw.

In such a case, measures such as
GTR
(guided tissue regeneration) and GBR (guided boil regeneration) and
sinus lift
(bone augmentation in the maxillary sinus) for the regeneration of bone volume and height can be used.

This bone gain can prevent premature loss of teeth weakened by periodontitis and is often an essential prerequisite for successful implant placement.
